AAMSN Position Statement on the Role of the Registered Nurse in Moderate Sedation

Our Position

AAMSN teaches that registered nurses trained and experienced in critical care, emergency, and/or peri-anesthesia specialty areas may be given responsibility for administration and maintenance of moderate or conscious sedation in the presence of, and by order of, a physician, consistent with applicable state law and facility policy.

The Registered Nurse

The registered nurse brings knowledge of the medications used and the clinical skills required to assess, interpret, monitor, recognize changes, and intervene when complications occur.

Patient Safety

When the RN is assigned to monitor a patient receiving sedation, patient observation must remain a primary responsibility, with sufficient additional personnel available when procedural complexity or patient condition requires it.

Nurses should know their state Board of Nursing requirements, facility policies, applicable accreditation standards, approved medications, monitoring requirements, emergency protocols, and scope-of-practice expectations.
